Botulinum Toxin Type-A or Botox®, as it’s more commonly known, is a prescription only medicine which should only be prescribed by a medical professional such as a cosmetic dentist or doctor, and only after a thorough face to face consultation between the patient and doctor.
Botulinum Toxin Type-A has been used for anti- wrinkle treatment since 1983 and is mainly used to treat dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated smiling, frowning etc in the upper area of the face such as frown lines and crows feet. Whereas Dermal Fillers are used to treat static lines and wrinkles, mainly in the mid and lower face.
How does it work?
It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the facial muscles that have been injected. This makes the muscles less active and therefore softens and smooths the appearance of persistent lines and wrinkles.
How many treatments will I need?
In most cases patients can see a real difference after one treatment. This is because Botulinum Toxin works gradually, smoothing and softening lines and wrinkles for up to 4 months. Every face is unique of course and we’ll advise you on how many treatments you’re likely to need and how often, depending on the results you’d like to achieve.
Is it safe?
Botulinum Toxin Type-A has a long history of safe use. If any adverse reactions occur they are usually mild and transient. Many adverse side effects can be reduced by careful selection of injections sites and application techniques by a medically trained professional.
How long does it work for?
It is not permanent and its effects can last for up to 4 months. As it is a natural, purified protein over time it is slowly broken down and eliminated by the body.
Does it give you a ‘frozen’ look?
It only relaxes the specific muscles that are causing the formation of wrinkles on your face and if administered by a trained medical professional correctly, all other muscles are left to function normally. Of course if you want a frozen look it can be done.
Is it treatment painful?
It’s very rare for treatment with Botulinum Toxin to be painful. Most patients experience a feeling of slight discomfort, if at all, during the treatment itself but that’s all. Rest assured we will talk you through what to expect before your first injection, so you’ll be fully prepared prior to treatment.
